Instead of reinstalling Windows, spend fifteen minutes following the steps below. You will be rewarded with a working computer.

1. Take the hard drive out of the old computer (Intel) and install it in the new computer (AMD).

2. Place the Windows XP Installation CD in the CD Drive and boot the new computer from it.

3. When the initial Windows XP Setup files have been loaded, press Enter to start a Windows XP Installation.

4. Press F8 if prompted to agree to the Microsoft End User License Agreement (EULA).

5. The installer will search for (and find) the Windows installation that already exists on your hard drive.

6. You be asked if you want to perform a Repair Install. Yes, you do! Press “R” to confirm and begin.

7. The installation environment is copied to the hard drive, and it automatically reboots to run the rest of the installation.

8. If you allow the computer to try to boot from the hard drive, it will blue screen. Instead, boot from the XP Setup CD again.

9. Enter the Recovery Console (press “R” at the first screen)

10. When you are logged into your Windows installation, and have the command prompt in front of you (C:\Windows), navigate to the following directory:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

11. Your command prompt should now read: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers and be awaiting you to key in a command.

12. Run the following two commands:
delete intelide.sys
delete intelppm.sys

13. Type exit and press Enter.

14. Let the computer boot from the hard drive this time and Voila’! Your computer should run through what appears to be a typical first time Windows XP install.

15. Install the necessary drivers for any new hardware, install a massive number of Windows Updates, and you should be back in business.

Originally posted at CPUHack.com

Grayhound arcade skill claw crane games

A friend of mine has picked up several of the claw style arcade cranes. The M30X, M35X, A70 and A75 all have similar issues. They are linked to the Max1987 ETM chip located next to the power connector, at least on the m35x it is for sure. The first symptoms are that of the power plug solders breaking or coming loose from the mother board. After that is repaired a time or two the Max1987 ETM chip will start to come loose as well. It can be soldered back on by someone with real steady hands and a good magnifying glass. I will post pictures as soon as I get them and add more to my results and process.

Please read this first if you are at all unsure, hell read it anyways it will build character, Disassembling Toshiba Satellite M35X laptop.

The Max1987 ETM can be purchased from pshub if you manage to screw yours up.

I don't have either, a steady hand or a good magnifying glass, so I am going to try to use the same process that is used to mount BGA chips, a heat gun to rework/reflow the solder.

A good tip I read used this replacement plug from Mouser to relocate the mounting of the power plug from the motherboard to the plastic case, the power adapter would plug in the same place.

Windows 2000 compressed Folders

I run Windows 2000 on my IBM Thinkpad 1200i. One day I downloaded a file and realized I didn't have any "unzip" program installed and didn't have my U3 jump drive. I thought to myself that Windows XP can do it natively I wonder if Windows 2000 will too. I started searching Google for hours and came across exactly what I was looking for here. So I went out and tried to get the file needed which was quite hard because the windows update catalog has changed. I did manage to find the file and have uploaded it here for you all to download and use on your own. I also found the link to the file on the Microsoft Site. Check out this website for the full instructions http://www.petri.co.il/enable_compressed_folder_in_w2k.htm.

What I want to do today is make it easier for you to install these files where they belong and register them and everything. It can be tricky if you want to try it feel free. I just think life should be made a little easier when it can be. I have uploaded a Batch file that will do the hard part for you, here. The files you need are zipped together with the batch file.

System info on desktop background

I have finally found it. I was looking for a program that will display my system info on my desktop without having to have separate programs or gadgets running to slow down my system. BGinfo does just this, it takes a snapshot of the info you specify and adds it to your background. It doesn't update in real time but it's nice to know about how much free space I have at a glance.

I also just found another one that will update in real time. The creator, Glenn Delahoy, states "Uses less than 1MB of memory and nearly zero cpu". Take a look for yourself and decide which one's for you.

Display system info on desktop background

Display system info on desktop background in real time (Desktop Info)

FinalBurner Auto Play Mod

I use a dvd burning software called FinalBurner by ProtectedSoft. It's an amazing little program. It does most of the burning, ripping and copying operations that the big name players do but without the huge overhead and performance drop of your machine. It's lightweight meaning it does not use all of your systems resources and last but definitely not least they offer a free version, No it does not have adds, no it does not run out in X amount of days and no it does not only copy 30 mins of a 2.5 hour dvd. Though there are a few limitations to the free version, I'll let you all check that out at protectedsoft.com.

The main reason I'm writing about this is that I have made a mod for this program. Please hear me out, It is a reg file but you all can read it before you install it, back up your current config and be reassured I'm not gonna screw anyone and take their info. What this reg file does is it adds a final burner icon to your auto play function of Windows XP. When you insert a blank CD, DVD, or other media you can burn on you will now see FinalBurner and have the option to open it yourself or make it the default and open everytime you insert a disc.

Here it is for everyone to try out if they feel like it.

FinalBurner Auto Play Mod (Mirror 1)

FinalBurner Auto Play Mod (Mirror 2)
